The wind is picking up. The clouds are gathering. The sky is getting dark. Better hurry. A storm is coming. Tap Tap Boom Boom is an exciting poemfor all ages about what happens in the city when the rain pours and thunderbooms. Vendors hawk umbrellas. Everyone ducks for cover. Strangers become friends.

Everleigh and Ava both truly enjoyed the dramatic languagein Tap Tap Boom Boom. Four-year-old Everleigheven asked if we could find more poetry books in the library. The mixed media illustrations convey thefeelings of the words beautifully.

After reading through the book, I emptied the kitchencabinets of my pots, pans, bowls, spoons, and most everything that looked funbut not breakable or sharp. I asked thegirls if they could make the sound of rain and thunder like in the book. They enthusiastically accepted the challenge. They reveled in finding the myriad of soundsproduced by cookware. We practicedmaking drip drop sounds, tap tap. And thunderous sounds, boom boom.

Once they had gotten the wiggles out, we sat on the ground, and I read the book again. This timewhenever I read tap, tap or boom boom, they would play the soundalong with me. A loud but awesomely funway to read a book together.

Towards the end of the poem, city-goers emerge from thesubway and doorways to see a surprise rainbowin the sky. There are any number ofrainbow crafts you could do to go along with the story, but I wanted something surprising.

We filled trays with shaving cream, then we squirted paint onto the shaving cream “clouds” to make a colorful rainbow. It took almost a whole can of shaving cream to fill the two trays.
