You can only play partypoker in the United States if you live in New Jersey. New Jersey became the first state to give partypoker a license to operate after it teamed up with the Borgata in 2013. Despite being in the US market for a while, partypoker hasn’t expanded much beyond partypokernj. There have been talks of it coming to Nevada and Delaware, but there hasn’t been much development on that front.

This could change as more states start legalizing online poker, but for now we have a few partypoker alternatives for players around the US. Sites like Ignition Poker, Bovada and BetOnline accept players from all 50 states and have everything you loved about partypoker. They have good sign-up bonuses, amazing tournament guarantees and solid cash games. For more information, check out our full reviews below.

State-regulated, real-money online poker is legally available in only a handful of states. As of July 2020, players in New Jersey, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Delaware enjoy access to legal online poker sites. Michigan and West Virginia have passed legislation to make online poker legal, but the launch of products is pending in those states. By Randy Ray & James Carter August 14th, 2019. Updated: January 2, 2020. The legality of online poker in the United States varies according to your jurisdiction. Contrary to what some sources might have you believe, no federal law specifically forbids online poker. State laws, on the other hand, might or might not, depending on the state. No doubt many Michigan players will be pleased with the news that legal, real money online poker is getting closer. The state legalized online gaming, sports betting, and poker in 2019. Until the legal battle over the Wire Act is final, however, Michigan will be a ringed-in market. That means players only battle other players within the state.

The Story of partypoker

Back in the day, partypoker was the biggest site in the United States, but the site decided to leave the US voluntarily after the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). By that point, partypoker had been around for a few years and grown immensely.

partypoker first launched on Aug. 1 2001 along with an online casino. There was a lot of hype because partypoker was the first site to offer $1 million tournament guarantees with satellites that started at just $22.

The live events drew the world’s best players including Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Chris Ferguson, Johnny Chan, and Huck Seed. The poker tournaments only kept growing and now partypoker still has a successfully live tournament series around the world.

By pulling out of the United States voluntarily, partypoker avoided the Black Friday chaos that engulfed PokerStars, Full Tilt and Absolute Poker. That’s also why partypokernj was able to launch in 2013 while PokerStars had to wait until 2018 to come back to the US.

partypoker in the USA

partypoker didn’t escape all legal action though. It was forced to pay $105 million in penalties to the U.S. government for processing some payments. While this doesn’t fully absolve PartyPoker, it does ensure they’ll never be prosecuted for any actions prior to the agreement.

Perhaps the biggest sign PartyPoker was preparing for entry into the US market came in July 2010 when they announced a planned merger with sports betting giant Bwin. The value of this merger exceeds $250 billion and instantly made the Party/Bwin combo (traded on London Stock Exchange) the largest publicly traded gambling company in the world. Under the terms of this agreement, PartyGaming shareholders will own 48.4%, Bwin shareholders 51.6% and the company will operate with joint CEO’s Norbert Teufelberger and Jim Ryan. This is likely quite significant in Party Poker’s US strategy for reasons we’ll mention momentarily.

GVC Holdings Acquires Bwin.Party

The new Bwin.party was itself absorbed by massive online gaming group GVC Holdings in 2015 for $1.4 billion. GVC Holdings has a variety of different businesses in the gaming industry including sports betting, casino and more.

GVC Holdings, which is based on the Isle of Man, is also a publicly traded company with licenses in 18 different countries and a massive market cap. The company is uniquely positioned to take advantage of softening laws regarding online betting in the USA thanks to its massive gaming infrastructure.

It helps that PartyPoker very much played along with US authorities in 2006 and that should help give it a head start on some of its international competitors like PokerStars, which opted to stay in the US market after UIGEA. GVC Holdings could also open a number of doors for PartyPoker as the site attempts to expand in the USA in markets like Nevada and potentially Pennsylvania.

There’s also a good chance that some of the bigger land-based gaming entities in the USA will move to the online market when it becomes available and PartyPoker might very well provide some software for those organizations. GVC already has one such agreement with MGM Resorts.

The New partypoker

partypoker has gone through a lot of iterations, the most notable is that the whole name is now in lowercase. The site also has a number of new pros representing it. The most notable is celebrity and comedian Kevin Hart. But they also have top pros like Jason Koon, Sam Trickett, Isaac Haxton and Kristen Bicknell.

They also have a number of Twitch streamers like Jaime Staples, Jeff Gross and Monika Zukowicz. partypoker has consistently grown and expanded to new platforms like streaming and up-to-date pros. They also sponsor World Poker Tour stops that you can watch on television or online at PokerGO.

It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for partypoker, especially of more states start regulating online poker in the United States.

partypoker NJ

As we mentioned above, you can play on partypoker if you’re within the borders of New Jersey. That’s it. You don’t have to live there, but you do need to be physically located in the state to play.

partypoker NJ has been operational for a while now and they offer both computer and mobile software. So you can play from the comfort of your Jersey City apartment or while you’re commuting across the Garden State. partypoker NJ is usually offering a bonus to first-time players, so make sure to check out their bonus page to see what they have available.

The fields are smaller than you might be used to, but that could change in the future if more states open their doors to partypoker in the future. We’ll be the first to tell you if they do.

After some stops and starts, Pennsylvania online poker players received good news on Wednesday. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) approved an interactive gaming license for BetMGM/Roar Digital.

The two companies partner in the US to offer the partypoker US Network in the US. Pennsylvania would make the platform’s second state offering online poker.

However, a potential launch date hasn’t been announced and Roar officials had no comment.

Getting the online poker party started in PA?

A new poker site in PA would give players at least another option. Under PGCB regulations, the MGM/Roar is recognized as a Qualified Gaming Entity (QGE). That means it operates as a stand-alone entity and doesn’t need a land-based partner.

The PGCB also approved the company for sports betting (although it would need a land-based partner) and other real money online casino gaming. Party’s possible entry into the market comes after some hiccups along the way.

The company was expected to be approved in August. PGCB chief enforcement counsel Cyrus Pitre spoke on the subject at the group’s July 8 meeting.

However, that timeline was delayed and apparently shifted to October. Players will now be awaiting to see when the platform might launch.

In Pennsylvania, players would find another “ringed-in” online poker option. That means users can only play others within the state. PokerStars already operates in this manner.

WSOP.com operates the only shared liquidity pact among Nevada, New Jersey, and with 888poker in Delaware. The future of interstate compacts remains unknown until the legal challenges regarding the Wire Act play out.

What to expect from a partypoker launch

Partypoker remains one of the best known online poker sites in the world. The company offers a nice software experience and has made major improvements to its mobile app in recent months.

In New Jersey, the platform also includes the BetMGM and BorgataPoker.com skins. It’s unknown if there will be additional skins in PA.

In recent months, party has ramped up some of its offerings in New Jersey. The company partners with the World Poker Tour for live and online events internationally.

That has also carried over to two recent events in New Jersey. The WPT Online Borgata Series in September featured 11 events and an overall guarantee of $275,000. The series proved a hit and ultimately paid out $912,000.

Pennsylvania offers a nice opportunity for even more events like this if the platform launches. With a population of almost 13 million, the state is the largest with legalized online poker. That’s about 4 million more than in the Garden State.

Partypoker could help grow PA market

PokerStars launched in the Keystone State in November 2019 and has had a poker monopoly for almost a full year. The company has seen nice revenue in the state to coincide with other operators in New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware.

While revenue numbers have declined in recent months, those are still at historically high levels. In September, PokerStars achieved online poker revenue of $2.4 million after an August total of $2.7 million.

The site has brought major series like the PA Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP) and major events like Pennsyl-MANIA to the state.

The partypoker approval could bring a second player in the market. The company has been bullish in recent years on expansion and that includes the US.

More PA live poker rooms reopen

Beyond online poker, many players have been happy to see live poker return in the Keystone State. Mount Airy was the first to return on Oct. 16. Others that have returned recently include:

  • Meadows Racetrack and Casino
  • Mohegan Sun Pocono
  • Rivers Philadelphia

PA casinos began reopening in June under added safety protocols. However, poker rooms haven’t been a part of that until now. As gamblers head back to casinos, PGCB officials expect the poker re-openings to spur table game revenues up further.

In September, table games accounted for $59.2 million in casino revenue. That’s down from August’s $65.1 million and $70.6 million in September 2019.

“The reopening of poker rooms will add to the positive performance of table games,” PGCB executive director Kevin O’Toole noted in Wednesday’s meeting about the recent reopening of live poker rooms.

Many Pennsylvania players are also hoping a new online poker room heads their way soon as well. USPoker will continue to update this story as more details emerge.
